O poreklu vrsta (pun naziv: O poreklu vrsta posredstvom prirodne selekcije ili očuvanje boljih rasa u borbi za život; prvo izdanje 24. novembra 1859.[1]) je čuvena knjiga autora Čarlsa Darvina koja je označila novu epohu u razumevanju evolucije organskog sveta. U njoj se iznose činjenice koje su plod Darvinovih opažanja na dugim putovanjima i razmišljanja kao i saznavanje da žive vrste nisu stvorene de novo, što je označilo nov model evolucionih promena.
Na osnovu proučavanja raznolikosti i prilagodljivosti srodnih oblika živih bića i spoznaje o postepenim promenama fosilnog sveta u poređenju s današnjim oblicima Darvin je utvrdio da su te promene posledica prirodnog procesa. Time delimično prihvata spoznaje svojih prethodnika, ali i objašnjava glavni mehanizam promena u živom svetu što je, po Darvinovu shvatanju, prirodni odabir vrsta. S obzirom na stalno menjanje živog i neživog sveta, u geološkoj prošlosti i danas, na Zemlji opstaju oni organizmi koji se najbolje adaptiraju.
Knjiga je u viktorijanskoj Engleskoj dočekana sa znatiželjom i na dan objave je bila odmah rasprodana. U toku plovidbe svetom, na brodu "Bigl", koja je trajala pet godina, Darvin je upoznao svu raznolikost krajeva, podneblja, flore i faune, ali i ljudskih grupa. Na osnovu tih razmišljanja o odnosima u prirodi, i proučavanja postojeće literature, je postepeno oblikovao svoje jedinstveno evolucijsko tumačenje fizičkog značaja Zemlje.
