Location

Mountain Lakes is a commuter railroad station in the borough of Mountain Lakes, Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The station is on New Jersey Transit's Montclair-Boonton Line, the last before the line merges with the Morristown Line at Denville station to the west. The station has one low-level side platform, serving a solo track.

History

Railroad service came to the area in 1869, when the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad built the freight-only Boonton Branch via Paterson to bypass the passenger Morris & Essex Railroad.^{[citation needed]} Passenger service was first provided at Fox Hill station, east of U.S. Route 46 in Denville.

In 1912, the DL&W built the Mountain Lakes depot to replace the old Fox Hill station, breaking ground in May and opening on November 10.^[7]

At some point, a new Mountain Lakes station was built.

The 1912 depot stands in the parking lot, where it serves as a restaurant, "The Station at Mountain Lakes". The building is on the Morris County Inventory of Historic Sites.^[8] It is also part of the Mountain Lakes Historic District, which was created by the New Jersey State Historical Preservation Office on July 22, 2005,^[9] and added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 7, 2005.
